OGDEN — An investigation is under way following a fatal fire in Ogden Tuesday morning.

According to a press release from the Ogden City Fire Department, crews were dispatched to reports of a structure fire involving a detached garage in the 3100 block of Adams Avenue around 5:58 a.m. Tuesday.

“Upon arrival, units observed smoke and flames coming from the garage and immediately initiated a rapid fire attack,” the release said. “The fire was contained to the garage and the vehicle inside. No additional homes or surrounding structures were damaged. During a search of the garage and vehicle, firefighters located one individual inside the vehicle. Due to the extreme fire conditions prior to our arrival, the individual had passed away.”

According to the release, the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office, Ogden Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office are on scene assisting with the investigation and no information on the victim will be released at this time.

Ogden Fire Chief Mike Slater told the Standard-Examiner that, as of midday, the investigation was still ongoing and he was unable comment whether or not foul play may have been involved.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life, and our thoughts are with the family during this time,” the press release concludes. “We appreciate the coordinated response of all agencies involved in helping protect our community.”

The release also notes that the Ogden City Fire Department was aided by the Riverdale Fire Department Tuesday morning and that total damages were estimated at around $40,000.
