OGDEN — An 11-year-old was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening in Ogden.

According to a press release from the Ogden City Police Department, officers located a vehicle that had been reported stolen around 7:45 p.m. Friday evening.

“Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield,” the release said. “As the suspect accelerated away, he struck one of the police vehicles attempting to stop him. The suspect fled at high speeds until ultimately colliding with another vehicle in the intersection at 31st Street and Grant Avenue.

“The victim vehicle was occupied by two adults and six children. One of the child passengers, aged 11, was ejected upon impact and sustained fatal injuries. The remaining seven occupants are being treated for injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening. The full nature and extent of their injuries are still being assessed.”

The release continues that the driver and a single passenger in the suspect vehicle were both identified as 14-year-old males and that they had also sustained injuries requiring hospitalization.

“The accident investigation is being handled by the Weber-Metro Crash Reconstruction and Scene Handling (CRASH) Team. The Ogden Police Department’s Investigations Bureau, in cooperation with the Weber-Morgan Homicide Task Force, is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and all related criminal offenses,” the release said. “Any charges stemming from this incident will be filed when the suspect(s) are no longer in need of medical care.”

The release goes on to describe the incident as “extraordinarily devastating” and notes that the department is grieving with and for the victim’s family.

“We are grateful for the efforts of the responding officers, Ogden Fire Department personnel, Weber Area Dispatch 911 dispatchers, and the medical professionals who provided immediate care under extremely difficult circumstances,” the release said. “We are also grateful to the members of partner law enforcement agencies who are providing assistance.”

The release notes that, due to the circumstances surrounding Friday’s incident, there will likely be no more details released regarding it.

“Because this incident involves juveniles, and out of respect for the victim’s family and others directly affected, the Ogden Police Department will not be providing identifying information at this stage,” the release said. “Additionally, due to the scope, complexity, and ongoing nature of this investigation, no further details are being released. Additional information will be shared when appropriate and when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the investigation.”
