John TaylorJohn Taylor is a Republican candidate for the House District 14 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Standard-Examiner.
1. Why is the position you are running for important?
Our Founding Fathers envisioned a Constitutional Republic where power was given to all citizens via elected representatives. Elections have consequences and really do matter because tremendous responsibility is given to representatives. The only way -WE THE PEOPLE- retain power is with the electoral process. This is why the integrity of elections is so important. Many of us have experienced buyer’s remorse after voting for a candidate who doesn’t meet expectations so it’s reassuring that we can exercise our power at the ballot box. A representative can never please everyone but they should listen and consider the best outcomes that align with our constitutional framework. I am running to maintain a robust and healthy balance of Federalism and I hope to be an advocate for maintaining this proper balance.
2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?
I have had many leadership opportunities in my community, the military, the republican party, in business and industry and even in my Faith. I value life experiences, the good and bad. I have come to realize that all the regrets I’ve experienced in life stem from those times I was given an opportunity that I didn’t take. I’m grateful for this potential opportunity to serve in my state. We face serious challenges and increasing threats to our freedoms and I intend to defend those freedoms. We live in a contentious and divided world. I hope to attract more bees with honey and unite us toward doing what is right for all citizens. Let’s not forget the two greatest commandments taught by Jesus Christ. Ultimately, I consider myself a disciple of Jesus Christ and my faith, my family, and my freedoms are my greatest priority.
3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.
I will be focusing on some transparency legislation surrounding Artificial Intelligence and the growing threats we are facing. I am working on legislation addressing some of the challenges we have seen with MIDA, the Stratos project and many other private public partnerships that weren’t communicated well with our citizens. I’m working on legislation related to our elections process and looking for some common sense ways to improve our dual path election process. I’m concerned deeply with election integrity after the flood of evidence coming out relating to the 2020 elections and I want to improve our processes. I’m concerned about some of the ethics, and conflicts of interests we have seen with elected officials and I will be a champion of our state auditor’s office to assist with accountability.
4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.
I believe we should moderate in some areas when there isn’t a clear path to resolve our differences. This does not mean we compromise on our principles but sometimes there are smaller nuanced details and differing opinions to the potential unintended consequences of a decision and we have to be willing to listen and consider our position. Essentially, we should not assume we have all the answers and be too proud and unwilling to listen and reconsider. A little humility can go a long way in this process and leadership requires humility. We must be cordial, respectful, and eager to understand those with opposing views. These are attributes of leadership and this is what fosters the ability to influence others as we saw Ronald Regan do so well in his service.
5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?
We balance diverse priorities by actively hearing and considering all views. Everyone has a voice and every voice matters. As a conservative, I make decisions based on my conservative compass but I believe I am always learning and should seek for understanding at all times. We are polarized on many issues. If you are in the minority party, you may feel unrepresented but that is how our constitution works. However, I don’t believe that means the minority party should be ignored. I believe we can see many lessons from Ronald Reagan who was able to engage across the aisle and come to mutual consensus. Regardless of your political persuasion, we experience the same pain and often have mutual concerns but just have a difference in how we approach those concerns. We can accomplish more if we unite rather than fight over these approaches.
