HILL AIR FORCE BASE — A small civilian aircraft made a landing on a roadway at Hill Air Force Base after suffering reported engine issues.

A press release from the 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs office noted that the incident occurred on the north side of the base.

“Emergency response crews from Hill Air Force Base responded to an incident involving a civilian aircraft that landed on base property near the North Gate at approximately 9:37 a.m. today,” the release said. “The aircraft, which experienced reported engine trouble, landed near the intersection of Wardleigh Road and Perimeter Road near the installation’s North Gate.”

The release continues that the pilot — who was the only occupant aboard the aircraft — was uninjured and that crews were still on base as of noon assessing the situation.

“The North Gate was temporarily closed to inbound and outbound traffic but has since been reopened,” the release said. “First responders and safety representatives remain on the scene. Safety officials are currently coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate the circumstances of the landing and determine the safest method to remove the aircraft from the installation.”

The Standard-Examiner reached out to the FAA for additional details.

According to the FAA, the plane in question is a Piper PA-28 and reports the time of landing as 9:20 a.m. The email goes on to add that a preliminary report is expected to become available on Friday and that the department is investigating the incident.

Further information on the pilot, the aircraft’s origin and destination and the full nature of the emergency are not available at this time.
