Some of those secrets just happen to be explosive.

Lt. Sean Endsley of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office told the Standard-Examiner one interested party happened to stumble upon a grenade Sunday afternoon around 2:41 p.m. on the north shore of the “neck” close to the dam.

“Obviously, with the lower levels at Pineview and the water draining that’s been going on, we’ve had lots of people interested in metal detecting, scavenging around and taking a look at what’s down there,” he said. “And somebody came across what looked like a hand grenade. And it certainly looked old — looked like it had been underwater for some time — but, obviously, given the risk with it being a hand grenade, they called us, which we’re thankful for.”

He said the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene to dispose of the grenade in place. The grenade was safely detonated with a controlled explosion.

Endsley said he doesn’t believe there are additional grenades that have been abandoned in the lake over the years but noted that this one wasn’t exactly expected either.

“We certainly have no reason to think that there would be other grenades or other explosives, but we didn’t have a reason to think this one would be there either,” he said. “What we’d like to get out and make sure to remind people of is if they do come across something that seems suspicious — certainly if there’s something that they suspect to be an explosive — not to touch it, to just call us right away so we can make sure what the object is and take care of it in the safest way possible.”

Even before Sunday’s grenade incident, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office has been warning people about the potential of finding dangerous items on the exposed lake bed, even going as far as to post a warning on Facebook on Sept. 9.

“Due to the low water levels during the current draining of Pineview Reservoir, we are seeing instances of items that have been submerged under water reappearing on the shores,” the post said. “If you see a suspicious, dangerous, or otherwise important item on the shore, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH IT.

“Reach out to the non-emergency line for Weber Dispatch, (801)395-8221 and notify them of the item so that they may dispatch a deputy when necessary.”

Endsley said there have been some other notable discoveries made as water has receded.

“Earlier this summer we were able to recover a vehicle from the reservoir,” he said. “That vehicle we knew was there, but because of the water depths, we had not been able to get to it to recover it. So as the water went down, we were able to recover that one. And then the truck that we posted in a photo (Sept. 9), that vehicle we did not know was down there, so it wasn’t until the water revealed it that we were able to see it. It was further down in the neck towards the spillway and far enough past the buoy line that we hadn’t been able to take our sonar that far to see it. That’s why we didn’t know it was there. But besides those two vehicles, we’ve also recovered three firearms since the water’s been draining and now this grenade from this weekend.”

The public is also being given a chance to clean up some of the less dangerous items that have been discarded in the reservoir over the years.

On its website, the Ogden Valley Watershed Group announced that the U.S. Forest Service’s Ogden Ranger Station will be hosting a Pineview Reservoir Clean-up on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon in commemoration of National Public Lands Day. Attendees will meet at the Pelican Beach parking lot on Pineview Reservoir. Gear provided includes trash grabbers, magnets, buckets and garbage bags. People volunteering are asked to bring their own work gloves and wear sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeves and a sun hat.
