New magazine a cheerleader for the Northern Utah lifestyle

By Jesus Lopez Jr., Standard-Examiner Staff - | Apr 26, 2015

OGDEN — The Standard-Examiner will have a new lifestyle magazine titled Wasatch View.

The magazine’s first issue will be in the April 27 edition of the Standard-Examiner.

Every month, the 80-page magazine will feature articles on subjects including local people, local entertainment, pets and food in a full-color, glossy format.

Standard-Examiner Marketing Director Karla Woodward said the magazine will focus on the community in a positive light.

“One of the great things about this magazine is we are able to focus on all of the positive things in Northern Utah,” Woodward said.

Woodward said while the daily paper shares information that is important for the community, not all of it may be positive.

Wasatch View will join other special sections such as the dining guide, outdoor guide, as well as the Reader’s Favorites and the Standard All-Stars, which will be published in May.

Veteran Standard-Examiner editor Vanessa Zimmer is in charge of putting the magazine together.

“It’s a blast,” Zimmer said, “I’m a real features diehard from way back and I love people stories and getting into the community and getting into ideas we haven’t seen written before.”

Most of the content will be provided by freelance writers and photographers, as well as a few former Standard-Examiner employees, such as Tim Gurrister, Jim Thalman and Stacey Kratz.

Regular features will include a Trail of the Month item by Lynn Arave, a TV column by Don Porter and a book review by Standard-Examiner Visuals Editor Kat Duncan.

“It’s going to be lots of brilliant photography,” Zimmer said. “We’re going to be lighter on text; it’s going to be fun to read and look at.”

For the first issue, the magazine will include an article on five unusual gift ideas for mom.

On the front cover, there will be a profile of Alicia Washington, founder of the Good Company Theatre in Downtown Ogden.

The magazine will cover some of the same topics as the style and entertainment sections of the paper, but in a different way.

For instance, the newspaper may have a story on the anniversary of the Golden Spike National HIstoric Site, but the magazine will have “Five Things You Didn’t Know about the Golden Spike.” The newspaper may cover the Ogden Marathon, but the magazine will discuss what makes it one of the top 10 races in the country.

“Everybody is really enjoying putting it together and I really hope the public likes it,” Zimmer said. “I’m really proud of it.”

The Standard-Examiner staff has been working on the magazine for the past six months, going over every detail to create something unique for the area.

There is nothing like this in Northern Utah, Woodward said. Nothing this comprehensive and of this caliber.

Woodward said everyone at the newspaper company loves this area and loves to find new places and things to share.

“With this magazine, we’ll have the opportunity to be the cheerleader for Northern Utah.”
