Wangsgards grocery will relocate to old Harmons location

OGDEN — An Ogden grocery store that has served the community for nearly 100 years isn’t leaving town — but it is headed across the street.

Officials from Ridley’s Family Markets announced Friday, Sept. 11, that Wangsgards Market will be moving across the street into the space that has for years been occupied by Harmons Grocery.

In mid-July, a joint press release sent out by both grocery chains revealed that Harmons would be leaving the 37 N. Harrisville Road building and Ridley’s would be moving in. Prior to the Harmons deal, the Idaho-based grocer took over management of the Wangsgards Market & Bakery, 120 N. Washington Blvd. Ridley’s officially took over that store in May.

Ridley’s Director of Operations Mark Ridley said earlier this summer that changes in the Top of Utah supermarket landscape have made it unrealistic to operate two grocery stores that are located in such close proximity. Subsequently, the company decided to consolidate the two stores into one location.

It wasn’t until Friday that Ridley’s announced that the old Harmons location would be the final home for the consolidation. Ridley says the familiar Wangsgards name will be retained after the merger.

“Over the years Wangsgard’s has been owned and operated by different families,” Ridley said in a press release. “And now Ridley’s is proud to honor the long-standing tradition of the Wangsgards name and be the fourth family to operate the store.”

Ridley’s owner Jerry Ridley said that moving Wangsgards across the street is a “best of both worlds” scenario for Ridley’s and its future customers.

“Since the former Harmons store is significantly larger than the Wangsgards location, we will be able to offer a more complete shopping experience that will include greatly expanded produce, service deli and bakery,” he said in the press release.

Jerry Ridley said the new Wangsgards will include a full-service butcher block and it will also retain customer favorites like the Five Points Grill and the full-service Ace Hardware store.

Harmons is scheduled to close permanently Saturday evening, Sept. 12, reopening as Wangsgards on Monday.

Ridley said the new store and the existing Wangsgards will stay open through September, with a liquidation sale at the old location being offered until it closes permanently on Oct. 1. The Ace Hardware store and 5 Points Grill will remain after Oct. 1 until remodeling is finished in the new store.

Ridley said all previous Wangsgards employees and all Harmons employees who weren’t offered transfer opportunities will be retained in the change.
