Ben Chournos has spent more than half of his life on two wheels. When he’s not riding a bike, he’s busy repairing one.

“Right out of high school, I started working in bike shops and I’ve been doing it ever since,” Chournos said.

With over 25 years of experience as a professional bike mechanic, it seemed only logical for Chournos to open his own bike repair shop. Shift Works opened in March 2017.

“What draws me to it is helping people,” Chournos said. “There’s a couple of shops that have closed in the last few years so I’m just trying to fill that void.”

Chournos has been a community advocate for local cyclists for several years. In 2014, he helped build the Ogden Bike Park, a 30-acre BMX and mountain bike trail network. He also serves on the Ogden Trails Network Committee and volunteers at the Ogden Bicycle Collective and G.O.A.L Foundation.

“There’s some magnetism going on around Ogden right now,” Chournos said. “It’s transformed into this really cool outdoor mecca and it’s bringing in bike companies and bike races.”

Some of the big races that come through Ogden include the XTERRA Nationals, Tour of Utah, and the USA Cycling Association National Championships.

After his dad brought his bike in for repairs, 13-year-old Mack Phippen decided to spend his spring break in the shop with Chournos teaching him about bike repairs.

“I knew how to fix some stuff from my dad and brother,” Phippen said. “I just like working on (bikes) and racing them.”

While there is no shortage of bicycle shops in the area, Shift Works will specialize in service and repairs, not bicycle sales.

“We service every make and every model and every type of bicycle,” Chournos said. “I’m just here simply to solve problems and make people’s bikes happy.”

Chournos has designed Shift Works to feel like a lounge where customers are encouraged to watch and learn about bicycle upkeep and repairs. There is also a built-in, self-serve wash bay where customers can clean their dirty bikes.

“You don’t even have to come in and buy anything, you can just come in and hang out,” Chournos said.
