Local businesses on 25th Street impacted by recent road construction have been given coupons from Ogden City to give to customers.

A portion of 25th Street, from Washington Boulevard to Jefferson Avenue, closed at the beginning of the new year to make way for the construction of the Utah Transit Authority’s new bus rapid transit line, and some business owners on the street say they have already experienced a decline in business despite Ogden City’s efforts to minimize the impact.

The new 5.3-mile Ogden Express, or OGX, and its 22 stations, set to be completed in 2023, will run from the Ogden FrontRunner Station through the heart of downtown and Weber State University to McKay-Dee Hospital. The road repairs and construction of the new BRT and the Jefferson Avenue station are expected to be completed by late spring of this year.

Multiple signs direct patrons to nearby streets for parking; Adams and Jefferson avenues and 24th and 26th streets are open with plenty of street parking most hours of the day and consumers can still access 25th businesses on sidewalks.

There is also free parking at the Peery Apartments lot, accessible from 24th Street.

Lotus Cafe owner Stephane DeTar thinks her sales have been declining slowly after a great start to the new year because of the cold weather and people having to walk a bit further to get to her 25th Street cafe.

Multiple signs guide patrons to alternative parking areas to access 25th Street businesses during the closure due to construction of Ogden's new bus rapid transit line.

“I think people are getting a little frustrated and inconvenienced by it all,” she said.

Parking has also been an issue for Thai Curry Kitchen, impacting weekend sales the most. “Customers are having to park and walk a lot further to get to the restaurant,” the business stated. “We are grateful for our customers’ support and hope that won’t discourage them from returning again in the future.”

The Monarch has free parking passes available to the State Parking Lot at 2556 Ogden Ave. (accessible from 26th Street) and coupons for $15 off one purchase at any of the affected businesses, offered by the city in an effort to encourage people to continue their patronage throughout the construction.

The $15 off coupons are also available at the other impacted businesses on 25th Street from Washington Boulevard to Jefferson Avenue.

Walking an extra block will go a long way in helping to keep these businesses afloat until 25th Street reopens later this spring when construction and repairs are completed.
