To that end, the city will soon see the arrival of the world’s most ubiquitous grocery and retail chain.
Per an announcement from the retailer on Tuesday, Walmart will build a new, 176,000-square-foot supercenter on the 4200 block of Midland Drive, just south of 4000 South.
Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield told the Standard-Examiner that construction on the supercenter will begin later this year, with its eventual opening targeted for fall 2026.
“We’re so excited to be West Haven’s first grocery store; what an honor that is,” Hatfield said. “It’s a growing area and we always look for locations where we can serve customers. … We’re excited to build a new store and be a part of West Haven.”
Hatfield said that the supercenter will bring 300 hourly and salaried jobs to the area in addition to sales tax revenue for the city. Information on hiring for the new store will be released at a later date. Hatfield added that Walmart hopes to support West Haven in other ways as well.
“We’re committed to helping the community at large, supporting nonprofits, donating food to local food banks — things like that,” Hatfield said. “Once we set up a store in a town, we are a part of that community and want to be a part of that community in many ways.”
The new supercenter will also feature an updated look and shopping experience for patrons, per Hatfield.
“Internally, we call it a store of the future because this is going to be our very newest store prototype. It will have a lot of high-tech [features]. It will have some really modern-looking features, displays and lighting,” she said. “It’s really exciting.”
West Haven Mayor Rob Vanderwood said in the release that a groundbreaking ceremony would occur “soon” and further emphasized the impact Walmart’s presence will have on the city and throughout the region.
“West Haven is proud to have Walmart join our business district family. Being close to other municipalities, and with convenience in travel distance, this store will be a very needed asset to our city as well as others. This will be West Haven’s first grocery store for our almost 26,000 residents and will add needed amenities through sales tax to our city.”
The West Haven Supercenter announcement comes on the heels of a new Walmart store’s impending arrival in Utah County. The Eagle Mountain Supercenter is currently under construction and is scheduled to open later this summer. Walmart employs more than 20,500 associates statewide.
