Senate Bill 284, sponsored by Sen. Stephen H. Urquhart, R-St. George, and Rep. Don. L. Ipson, R-St. George, was approved, 52-21 with three absent, Thursday by the House. It now goes to the governor.

Colleges and universities across the state have offered a concurrent enrollment program for many years to high school students who want to earn college credits. Ipson said the program is costing higher education too much and may be discontinued in some areas if students do not pick up some of the costs.

Students who are enrolled in the concurrent enrollment program and want to receive college credit can be charged up to $30 per credit hour on a sliding scale. Students on the free and reduced lunch program can be charged up to $5 per credit hour, according to the bill.

The new fees are expected to generate about $5.2 million for higher education.
