Weber School District officials considering boundary changes

Weber School District officials are considering boundary changes to avoid or eliminate overcrowding in certain schools. Proposal 2 would send elementary students from a new subdivision near 1700 North and Washington Boulevard to Green Acres Elementary, instead of Majestic Elementary. Students from the subdivision, who are already attending Majestic, could opt to stay.

Weber School District officials are looking at opening a boundary study for Majestic, Lomond View and North Ogden Elementary schools. The goal of the study would be to find ways to relieve overcrowding at Majestic Elementary by moving some students to schools that are under capacity.

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Weber School District is beginning to look at changing school boundary lines.

“We’re going to need to be doing some boundary adjustment studies in some areas of our district,” said Nate Taggart, spokesman for the school district. “We’re looking at the schools that we have that are over capacity, or are heading in that direction.”

Officials are expecting more growth in the north end of the district, as well as to the west, and would like to make changes in those areas before families move in.

“For example, Majestic Elementary is at capacity, and there’s a new subdivision being put in,” said Taggart, noting that there’s a potential for about 145 students to live in that subdivision. “Instead of those students going to Majestic, it’s proposed that they go to Green Acres Elementary.”

District planners are also looking at tweaking the boundaries of Valley View and North Park elementaries, in Roy.

“There’s a new multi-family housing development going in on Midland Drive, and the proposal is to adjust that new development to go to North Park,” he said.

Weber School District officials are considering boundary changes to avoid overcrowding at some schools. Proposal 3 would move students in new multi-family housing developments on Midland Drive, between Hinckley Drive and 3300 South in Roy, to North Park Elementary. The area is currently in Valley View Elementary School boundaries.

No decisions have been made at this point, Taggart stressed — these are strictly proposals.

There may also be boundary adjustments coming that involve students already established in schools.

“For that we would need to open up a boundary study,” Taggart said. “It’s proposed that a boundary study be opened for students in the Majestic, Lomond View and North Ogden elementary school boundaries.”

Currently, Majestic is at 113 percent of capacity, and Lomond View is at 89 percent capacity. North Ogden Elementary, which is a newer, bigger building, is at 69 percent of capacity.

“We want to do all that we can do to even out enrollment, before we have to build new buildings,” said Taggart.

The district has purchased property in the area, expecting to need more schools in the near future.

Growth in elementary schools may result in boundary changes to junior highs.

“It’s proposed that students at Green Acres start attending North Ogden Junior High,” Taggart said. “Currently they’re going to Orion Junior, and this would alleviate future crowding at Orion Junior High.”

Weber School District officials are suggesting a boundary adjustment study to avoid future overcrowding at Kanesville Elementary School. Building permits indicate that as many as 230 homes, and 716 apartments, could be built in the area.

There’s also a proposed boundary adjustment study to look at potential overcrowding at Kanesville Elementary.

‘There are permits that combine for a possible 946 family dwellings … that includes 230 homes and 716 apartments,” Taggart said. “That doesn’t mean they’re going to be built immediately, but it’s something that we need to look at, and with boundary adjustment studies the process includes the schools and the patrons that attend that school.”
