OGDEN — All Ogden School District students will be able to get free meals for the rest of the school year, the district announced Wednesday.

“We hope this decision will benefit families by easing the financial burden of paying for school meals,” the district said in a statement. The district’s Child Nutrition Department will tap state funding to cover the cost of providing free lunches and breakfasts to those who otherwise wouldn’t qualify.

The decision to supply free meals only applies to the rest of the 2022-2023 school year.

“Parents will need to plan on submitting a free-and-reduced-meals application or pay for school meals for the 2023-2024 school year. The Ogden School District Child Nutrition Department will re-evaluate the opportunity to offer meals at no cost to all students in the future, based on available funding,” the district statement said.

Eight of the district’s 18 schools had already qualified for inclusion in a U.S. Department of Agriculture program that provides funding for meals in schools with high poverty rates.
