WEST POINT — In front of friends, family, fellow educators and the entire student body at West Point’s Lakeside Elementary, fourth-grade teacher Hollie Fisher was recognized on Thursday as the Davis School District’s teacher of the year.
Fisher was honored at a schoolwide assembly, after which Layton’s Young Kia and the Young Caring for Our Young Foundation presented her with the one-year lease of a 2025 Kia Seltos. Also included was a year of insurance paid for by Goldenwest Credit Union and fuel cards from Marathon Petroleum.
“This is unbelievable,” Fisher told the Standard-Examiner after the event. “I have no idea what is going on right now, and that I have a brand new car. So, I feel super special that everybody came to see me today.”
During her two-decade career in education, Fisher has endeavored to prepare her students for life and careers in the digital age, working as a Microsoft Innovative Educator, or MIE, Expert. She has also served students as an ESL specialist and instructor and previously worked for schools in both the Weber School District and Clark County School District in Nevada.
Fisher is credited with launching the Junior Microsoft Expert program at Lakeside.
“She has been excellent in her career, but really innovative in trying to find ways to bring opportunities in for her classroom,” Davis School District Assistant Superintendent Logan Toone told the Standard-Examiner. “She has been way out front on all things STEM, in my view. … (Hollie) is willing to try something new and then modify it, make it her own — create an experience for her kids. Her work with Microsoft is renowned across the state.”
For Fisher, embracing technology in the classroom was a natural evolution in her approach to teaching.
“I realized that that’s the way that our kids learn, you know? We’re preparing students for jobs that haven’t even been created yet, so I just feel like I need to teach my kids to be flexible and be diverse in their skills, to be troubleshooters when something goes wrong,” Fisher said. “They have such an excitement and passion for technology. So, it’s an easy way to bridge the gap between that and learning.”
While a teacher of the year honor is validating on some level, Fisher’s family recognizes the work she does meticulously preparing and tailoring individualized lesson plans on a daily basis.
“Hollie lives to teach,” said her husband, Jed Fisher. “She puts every free minute into learning, planning and teaching. She loves technology and teaching and she strives to improve each year. I am so happy that she gets to be recognized for something she loves to do.”
In the end, though, Hollie Fisher doesn’t do what she does for recognition.
“It’s all about the kids,” she said. “Every day, they make me laugh, they challenge me and just make me realize that being a teacher is the best job in the world.”
Said Young Kia General Manager Dallin Breshears of the opportunity he and the Young Automotive Group has to recognize teachers: “We love partnering with the school district because schools are fostering this new generation … and teachers are overlooked many times. So, we love celebrating teachers.”
