OGDEN — The annual Mountain West Regional Conference of Citizens’ Climate Lobby is set to be held Thursday through Sunday at Weber State University.

According to a press release on the conference, highlights will include “discussion panels with the ski industry personnel, a panel with conservative and liberal students, advocacy and lobby training workshops and more. Attendees will leave with a new understanding of how to influence their Members of Congress and convince them to advocate for national climate policy while meeting new friends and having fun.”

CCL volunteer Karen Jackson said U.S. Rep. John Curtis will be a keynote speaker Saturday.

“He will be talking to us about climate and legislation that he’s putting forth,” Jackson said. “He’s been a great supporter of us. We do hikes with him.”

She said there are still spaces available for the public to attend.

According to Jackson, the goal of Citizens’ Climate Lobby is to raise awareness of climate issues.

“(CCL) is an international, nonpartisan organization that lobbies Congress and works with our legislative representatives to create political will for helping us have a healthy and safe climate,” she said. “Pretty much everyone who’s on Capitol Hill will get a visit from us. … We are actually one of their favorite groups to talk to because we’re kind and respectful and we’ve seen a lot of good things happen on the Hill because of our representation and having them recognize what their constituents would like to have.”

She added that the group has very humble beginnings.

“Citizens’ Climate Lobby was started in a senior center in California by Marshall Saunders,” she said. “It was probably 10-15 years ago. It started out with a few members. … We have thousands and thousands and thousands of members now across the United States. We have chapters internationally too.”
