SALT LAKE CITY — A Weber County lawmaker has been elevated to majority leader in the Utah House, the second-ranking leadership post.
The Utah House Majority Caucus on Tuesday elevated Rep. Mike Schultz, a Republican from Hooper, to the spot to replace Francis Gibson. Gibson, a Republican from Mapleton, stepped down effective Monday to focus on his career and family.
“Serving as Majority Leader is the chance of a lifetime,” Schultz said in a statement. “This is not an opportunity I take lightly, and I am honored my colleagues have entrusted me with the responsibility. I promise to work hard and in the best interest of the caucus and for the people of Utah.”
Schultz, in his fourth term, had been serving as majority whip, the third-ranking leadership post. Rep. Jefferson Moss, a Republican from Saratoga Springs, was tabbed to take over that post. Rep. Brad Wilson, a Kaysville Republican, remains as House speaker, the top leadership position.
Rep. Stephen Whyte, a Republican from Mapleton, was picked by Utah County Republicans to take over from Gibson.
