SALT LAKE CITY — A judge from Ogden has been nominated to the Utah Supreme Court.

Gov. Spencer Cox on Tuesday nominated Utah Court of Appeals Judge Diana Hagen to the state’s high court, subject to Utah Senate confirmation.

Hagen grew up in Ogden and attended Ben Lomond High School, according to the announcement from the governor’s office. She still lives in the Ogden area with her husband, Tobin, and their two children, Kaira and Archer. They enjoy camping together in the Wasatch mountains and are all avid scuba divers.

“Judge Hagen’s distinguished career as an appellate court judge and federal prosecutor as well as her leadership and service in numerous professional and community groups have well prepared her for this moment,” Cox said in a prepared statement. “We are delighted she is willing to take on a new challenge and know she will serve the people of Utah with integrity.”

“I am grateful to Governor Cox for the confidence he has placed in me and especially honored to have been selected from an outstanding group of nominees,” Hagen said in a statement. “I am mindful of the great responsibility and public trust that comes with this appointment. If confirmed by the Utah Senate, I will work hard to be deserving of that trust.”

If confirmed, Hagen will replace Justice Constandinos Himonas, who retired March 1.

After receiving her law degree from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in 1998, Hagen was a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell. She was an assistant U.S. attorney for 17 years, including chief of the appellate section for almost a decade.

Then-Gov. Gary Herbert in 2017 appointed Hagen to the Utah Court of Appeals, where she was chair of the Supreme Court’s Office of Professional Conduct Oversight Committee, chair of the Judicial Education Committee and the appellate court representative on the Utah Sentencing Commission.

The Utah Senate’s Judicial Confirmation Committee on Tuesday opened the public comment period for Hagen’s nomination.

Those wishing to comment should notify the committee staff, Jerry Howe at the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel, by 5 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the Utah State Capitol, House Building, Suite W210, PO Box 145210, Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-5210. All statements should include the respondent’s name, telephone number and mailing address.
