Weber County Democrats to pick new leadership at convention
OGDEN — Weber County Democrats gather Saturday to elect new leadership.
The Weber County Democratic Party convention starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and will be held at DaVinci Academy at 2033 Grant Ave. in Ogden.
Kate Nielsen, the interim chairperson, is the sole announced hopeful for the party leadership post. She was elevated from vice chairperson to chairperson after Carly Cassidy stepped down from the post last January.
Annette Mifflin is running to be vice chairperson, Chelsea Te’o is running to be secretary and Joshua Hoggan — now serving as secretary — is running to be treasurer. Jeremy Shinoda, the current treasurer, isn’t running again. Those elected serve two-year terms.
Making the selection will be the county Democratic delegates, who number around 100. The Democrats will also pick party reps for the Utah House districts in the county.
If picked to keep the leadership post, Nielsen said a priority would be bolstering the fortunes of the Democratic Party, which typically plays second fiddle to Republicans.
“My No. 1 goal is to have a two-party system in Utah again,” she said. The local party, she added, is in “rebuilding mode” and she hopes to generate more enthusiasm and focus among party adherents.
