OGDEN — A key date on the local political calendar is just around the corner.

The Weber County Democratic Party and the Weber County Republican Party are set to hold their respective county conventions this Saturday. In addition to conducting the business of nominating candidates and delegates for the state convention, there also will be opportunities to hear from several prospective office-holders.

The Weber County Republican Party’s nominating convention will be held at 11 a.m at Ben Lomond High School, 1080 Ninth St. in Ogden.

“We’re opening the doors  at 9 o’clock for delegates to come, get their credentials and meet with candidates,” county Chair Jackson Wing told the Standard-Examiner. “At 11 o’clock, we’re going to begin the convention. We’re going to hear from some of our our elected officials.”

He said Gov. Spencer Cox and U.S. Rep. Blake Moore will give quick remarks on their way to other nominating conventions in the state.

Wing added that the convention will be open to the public.

“Anybody is welcome,” he said. “Obviously, only delegates can vote.”

The Weber County Democratic Party’s nominating convention will follow a similar format and is set to begin at noon at the DaVinci Academy of Science and the Arts, 2033 Grant Ave. in Ogden.

“We encourage delegates and the public alike to come before noon, walk around, meet others, have a look at our booths from the candidates and also local organizations,” county Chair Kate Nielsen told the Standard-Examiner. “We’ll have a brief talk from the chair, we will have an opportunity to hear speeches from 10 fine Democratic candidates for offices from county to state House, to federal positions such as Congress and Senate seats.”

She said that the public is welcome at the convention.

“This is really just about the most important thing we do right up until Election Day,” she said.
