Winter street parking rules in Northern Utah cities
With the first major Utah snowstorm of the 2015-16 winter in the books, you may have wondered what winter parking ordinances your city has in place. Many municipalities had street parking rules take effect in November.
Here are the ordinances in major cities in Northern Utah.
BRIGHAM CITY: On-street parking is prohibited during any snowfall and until the street has been plowed from curb to curb. Police are authorized to issue citations, and if the offending vehicle or trailer is considered a safety problem it can be impounded. Infractions are punishable by fines up to $500. Tenants of rental properties can dispute citations if the property has no off-street parking made available to them.
CLEARFIELD: Clearfield code prohibits parking on public streets between midnight and 5 a.m. from Nov. 1 through the end of February.
FARMINGTON: Farmington ordinance calls for traffic citations issued for parking on the street between 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. from Nov. 15 through the end of February.
LAYTON: Layton prohibits on-street parking from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. during the months of December, January and February, and “when the removal of snow from the streets is apparent or imminent, or when necessary, as determined by the City.” First-time violators can be fined up to $10, with subsequent violations being subject to court sentencing.
LOGAN: On-street parking is prohibited between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. from Nov. 15 through the end of February. Logan suspends this ordinance during Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends “to accommodate family members celebrating” the holidays.
MORGAN: Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports prohibited winter street parking from midnight to 6 a.m. between the dates of Nov. 1 and March 1, or during snowstorms. This applies to both Morgan City and Morgan County streets.
NORTH OGDEN: North Ogden City enforces a winter parking ordinance of midnight to 6 a.m. from Nov. 15 to March 15, except for physicians and emergency vehicles in emergency situations. The ordinance also prohibits on-street parking during or within 24 hours after a snowstorm. Violators could face a penalty or towing of the vehicle.
OGDEN: Ogden reports no simple time and date ordinance, but residents should not park on the street during or just after snowstorms. From Nov. 1 to March 15, owners of vehicles found impeding street snow removal could be cited or the vehicle may be impounded.
Owners have 48 hours to move cars that have become “snowbound” — stuck or buried because snow plows had to plow around it — or the city will consider the car abandoned, subjecting the vehicle to removal and impound.
ROY: Roy City prohibits on-street parking between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. from Nov. 15 to March 15, regardless of weather. Violators can be subject to fines of $35 or more.
SOUTH OGDEN: On-street parking is prohibited between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., Nov. 15 to March 15, and during or immediately after a snowstorm. This excludes physicians and authorized emergency personnel.
