Full closure of Ogden Canyon to occur Tuesday night

OGDEN — The Utah Department of Transportation has scheduled a complete closure of State Route 39 through Ogden Canyon from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Primary support beams are being replaced along the mid-canyon bridge near the Gray Cliff Lodge restaurant.
Senior Communications Manager of UDOT Region One Mitch Shaw says the two best alternate routes are the North Ogden Canyon and Trappers Loop Road/State Route 167. No traffic will be allowed through the construction zone at the mid-canyon bridge.
As part of a bridge rehabilitation and replacement project in 2019, UDOT has successfully completed the rebuild of the far east-end bridge near Pineview Reservoir and the bridge located at the mouth of the canyon.
Work on the mid-canyon bridge, the only one to be completely replaced, has been delayed from the fall of 2021 to January 2022 due to a shortage of supplies “like actual road paint,” Shaw said.
Upon completion, the new and improved mid-canyon bridge is expected to last 75 years. Shaw says the bridge did not pose an immediate threat to motorists, it’s just old. UDOT regularly checks its inventory of all bridges, statewide, to ensure they are up to code and safe for travel.
