Weber County — time to turn in your ballot, Election Day looms

Several incumbents in Weber County are saying they plan to seek reelection in 2022, though the filing period for next year's election cycle doesn't start until March 7, 2022. OGDEN — Voting in municipal elections is almost over, so if you haven’t done so already, get your ballot in.

So far, relatively few are heeding the call. As of Friday, Ryan Cowley, head of the Weber County Elections Office, said about 20,000 mail-in ballots had been returned — about 16% of the 124,000 sent out around the county.

“It’s a little lower than what we would’ve hoped for,” he said.

Even so, the stakes are notable. Races are contested for six mayoral posts in the county, in West Haven, Farr West, Harrisville, Huntsville, Plain City and Washington Terrace. Moreover, numerous city council seats are on the ballot as well as a $279 million bond question facing voters in the Weber School District.

Voting culminates Tuesday and there are a few ways to cast ballots:

  • If you received a ballot in the mail, it must be postmarked by Monday if you send it back via the U.S. Postal Service. Cowley recommends asking that a postal worker date stamp your envelope if you go this route.
  • Voters may also return their mail-in ballots in any of several dropboxes scattered around Weber County up until 8 p.m. on Tuesday. No postage is necessary.
  • In-person voting goes from noon-6 p.m. on Monday and from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Weber Center, 2380 Washington Blvd. in Ogden.

County election workers will start counting ballots after polls close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday and the initial, partial results — still unofficial — should be posted on the Weber County Elections Office website by around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
