KAYSVILLE — Police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old girl who was killed when hit by a vehicle during Kaysville’s Fourth of July parade.

Macie Hill was dancing as part of a patriotic presentation in the parade, Officer Lexi Benson, the Kaysville Police Department’s spokesperson, said Tuesday.

The girl was struck by a Hummer with a trailer attached, Benson said, but further details of the 10:45 a.m. Monday incident were not released pending the investigation.

“It was an absolute freak accident,” Benson said. “However, we will spend time and effort going back over things to see if we can do anything to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

The girl was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Benson said.

Benson said the remainder of the parade was canceled to preserve the scene for investigation.

A neighbor of the girl’s family, Jennie Dopp, started a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses. By Monday morning, $68,000 had been raised, more than enough for the immediate needs, Dopp said. Counseling and therapy for family members also will be needed, she said, adding that the family hopes to use any excess donations on a community project to be determined.

“Macie was the youngest in her family and a princess to her three older brothers and her parents,” Dopp said on the social media page. “Macie’s dad said she loved her Patriot Cheer team. She loved cheering and Macie passed away doing what she loved, being with her team.”
