OGDEN — The Boy Scouts’ Crossroads of the West Council is seeking out volunteers interested in helping with Cub Scouts activities.

The Crossroads of the West Council, which covers Utah and small portions of Idaho and Wyoming, has been holding a series of training sessions — Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, or BALOO, courses — across Utah. The last one scheduled for 2022 is set for July 15-16 at Camp Kiesel in Weber County, near Causey Reservoir.

Any Cub Scouts group planning an outdoor overnight activity must have at least one leader with BALOO training involved in organizing the event. The training focuses on things like hiking, gear selection, outdoor ethics, fire safety and more, said Wayne Miller, who helps lead an Ogden-based Cub Scouts group.

“You’ll learn how to make camping activities and outings fun. You’ll discover how to keep your Cub Scouts safe and entertained. And you’ll learn how to plan an event that’s rooted firmly in Cub Scouting’s principles,” reads the BALOO website.

Though the key aim of promoting BALOO training is to get more volunteers, that’s not the only motivation. Miller said the Scouts organization in Utah, more broadly, is also pushing to get word out that the Cub Scouts program — geared to boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade — is alive and well in the state and that plenty of kids are benefiting from it.

The BALOO training is geared to parents who may have little or no experience in camping and it’s meant to be fun as well as informative. “Adults need to have fun, too,” Miller said.

Cub Scout volunteers or parents interested in taking part in the July 15-16 training session can get more details online at utahscouts.org/baloo.

Starting at $4.32/week.
