Venerable Phramaha Suphat Sukyai dicusses the upcoming Songkran Festival at the Wat Chaimongkolvararam Buddhist temple in Ogden go Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

OGDEN — In celebration of Buddha’s birthday, the Thai Wat Chaimongkolvararam temple is hosting a multicultural event on Sunday, May 15. The public event at will take place from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the temple, located at 402 Wall Ave.

Lunch is being donated by local Thai restaurants and, while the event is free to attend, donations are appreciated.

According to Venerable Phramaha Suphat Sukyai, the Thai Wat Chaimongkolvararam temple president, completing the temple has been a multi-year endeavor funded entirely by public donation.

City paperwork and permitting for the temple began in 2008 — a full decade before opening in 2018.

Sukyai said he suspects it will take another two years for the temple to be completed, but that will not prevent them from opening the doors to the wider community. This will be the first celebration of its kind at the temple in several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If we can learn something from the pandemic, we can learn to not live carelessly, including the monks,” Sukyai said.
