1 killed, 1 critically injured while fixing flat tire on I-15
OGDEN — Two men were out of their vehicle tending to a flat trailer tire Tuesday when a passing pickup truck hit them, killing one and critically injuring the other, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said.
The driver of a pickup with the trailer pulled over on the left shoulder of northbound Interstate 15 in Ogden at about 11:30 a.m. after sustaining at least one flat tire, perhaps two, Roden said. Another pickup with a trailer, apparently with the same company, pulled up behind to assist.
The men decided to get back in their trucks to try to pull farther off the road when a pickup sideswiped the rear trailer “and ended up hitting the two pedestrians,” Roden said. One man was catapulted across the median to land on the southbound shoulder. He was airlifted to a hospital but did not survive, Roden said. The second man was hospitalized in critical condition.
The investigation was continuing Tuesday, with several lanes blocked for hours to accommodate the cleanup and investigation.
