OGDEN — In a unanimous 6-0 vote Tuesday night, members of the Ogden City Council approved a resolution authorizing the creation of a grant program for nonprofit entities with $1.3 million in funds provided by the federal American Rescue Plan Act, which was signed into law last year.

Under the program, a minimum of $25,000 is required for a grant, which must be used for capital improvement projects with annual operating budgets exceeding $250,000.

According to city documents, preference will be given to organizations providing youth or family services.

Grant applications submitted to the comptroller’s office will be reviewed to ensure general requirements are met before being forwarded to the city’s loan committee, made up of six city staffers.

Minimum eligibility requirements include but are not limited to being a nonprofit organization; operating as of the grant application date; being free of city, state and federal tax liens or judgements; as well as obligating all grant funds by Dec. 31, 2024, and spent by Dec. 31, 2026.

Mara Brown, Ogden City management services director, said grant applications will open this week and remain open until Oct. 6.

Councilman Richard Hyer said he believes the grant program will elevate the successes of the many groups already doing great work in the community.

“Decisions to approve programs like these are easy to make,” said Hyer, who hopes organizations take advantage of it.
