The 37th annual Lindquist Pops concert and fireworks show is held at Weber State University on July 12, 2015.

OGDEN — Get ready for fireworks and loud bangs.

The annual Lindquist Family Symphony Pops Concert and Fireworks show is set for this coming Sunday from 9-11 p.m. It will be held on the Weber State University campus.

“Every year, we are grateful to the Lindquist family for sponsoring this beloved event that brings our community together on WSU’s beautiful Ogden campus,” Weber State President Brad Mortensen said in a statement.

Activities start at 9 p.m. on Sunday with a concert by the New American Philharmonic, which will perform at the Ada Lindquist Plaza. The performance culminates with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” and blasts from the battery of 16 cannons provided by the Cannoneers of the Wasatch.

A massive fireworks display follows at around 10 p.m.

The Lindquist Family Symphony Pops and Fireworks show will take place at Weber State University on July 16, 2023.

Thousands of spectators are expected. Attendees typically spread out in the grassy areas around the campus. Accordingly, the interior part of the campus will be closed to vehicles.

“The roundabouts off Harrison Boulevard and Dixon Drive will be closed to traffic, but vehicles can still access campus from Skyline Drive and Taylor Avenue,” Weber State said in a statement. Spectators can’t save spaces before 6 p.m. on Saturday and tarps, stakes and tent pegs aren’t allowed due to safety concerns.

Now in its 44th year, the free community celebration was initiated by John A. and Telitha E. Lindquist in 1978. John E. Lindquist, president of Lindquist Mortuaries and Cemeteries in Ogden, continues the tradition, and the Ogden City Council on Tuesday was to present him with the Compass Award for his contributions to the city, notably his role in the pops concert.

The Compass Award is a “rarely presented recognition” presented by the City of Ogden to individuals, groups and organizations, read city documents on the Lindquist presentation.

The annual concert and fireworks show at Weber State “has become an integral part of Ogden’s cultural fabric, captivating thousands of people each year while fostering a strong sense of community spirit,” reads the Compass Award certificate prepared by Ogden. The certificate further noted Lindquist’s role in aiding in the remodel of the social sciences building at Weber State that now bears his name, Lindquist Hall.
