OGDEN — A shootout at an Ogden apartment complex Tuesday afternoon left an Ogden officer with a gunshot wound and a male suspect dead.

The officer was hospitalized and “is in stable condition, but continuing to receive treatment,” Jake Sube, deputy chief with the Ogden Police Department, said at a press conference. “The suspect at the scene was shot and succumbed to the injuries at the scene.”

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. as officers were responding to a call about a violation of a protective order at Washington Park Apartments at 170 N. Washington Blvd., just south of the Ogden-Weber Technical College campus.

Police released limited details at this stage of the investigation and didn’t take any questions. But as Sube described it, multiple officers responded to the incident after an initial exchange of gunfire between the first officer or officers on the scene and the gunman.

“It is important to note that this situation was highly chaotic and rapidly evolving, leading to the involvement of multiple officers discharging firearms during the incident,” Sube said.

Jake Sube, deputy chief in the Ogden Police Department, speaks at a press conference on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, about an officer-involved shooting that left an officer injured and a suspect dead.

As of around 4:20 p.m., the entry to the apartment complex was closed off and numerous marked and unmarked police vehicles with lights flashing lined the east side of Washington Boulevard outside the Washington Park Apartments complex.

Navander Williams arrived outside the complex in the aftermath of the incident to visit his mom and grandma, who live in Washington Park. As police described it to him, a suspect fired on police and police returned fire, similar to Sube’s account.

His mom was washing dishes, Williams said, when she heard four loud pops, apparent gunshots. “That was it and all of a sudden surrounded by police sirens,” he said.

The multiple officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the matter, routine in such circumstances. The Weber-Morgan Critical Incident Task Force will investigate, also standard in officer-involved shootings.

“We are committed to ensuring (a) comprehensive, unbiased and transparent investigation. It is important to gather all the facts before we make any further statements or draw conclusions,” Sube said.

He went on to laud the bravery of the responding officers. “They faced significant danger and acted swiftly and decisively to protect the public. Their actions demonstrated professionalism and courage that our officers exhibit every day,” he said.

Tuesday’s incident was the first officer-involved shooting in Weber County since an April 27 incident in North Ogden involving North Ogden police and a suspect who allegedly fired on them. North Ogden police were responding to reports of gunfire at a home when a man inside, Jeffrey Roberts, fired on them, prompting them to fire on him and kill him, according to authorities.
