OGDEN -- The average Thanksgiving meal equals about 3,000 calories, so if you're planning to fill your plate, you might want to get some exercise in before sitting down to dinner.
The 38th annual Thanksgiving Day Run/Walk for Charity will begin at the west parking lot at Ogden Regional Medical Center, 5475 S. 500 East. The event begins with registration at 8:15 a.m. followed by a 5-mile run or 2-mile walk at 9 a.m. The only entry fee is any donation of nonperishable food or monetary contributions, which will support the Ogden Rescue Mission, Lantern House, Catholic Community Services and the Salvation Army in Ogden. Checks can be made to the Newman Center, a co-sponsor of the event.
Ogden Regional Medical Center spokesman Craig Bielik said the event has always been extremely popular.
"We ask people to register but we don't require it, so many do not," he said. "We have about 300 that register when the weather is cold or snowy and about 600 when it's mild. I estimate our crowd between 500 to 900."
Bielik also said around $4,000 is typically donated. However, after the event was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, more than $10,000 was raised in 2021.

"We invite three or four food shelters and they have these big bins, maybe like 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall, and they end up being about half full. This has always been a good-of-your-heart event with no prizes or goals."
A Thanksgiving Mass also will be celebrated at 7 a.m. in the Education Center of Ogden Regional Medical Center. All are welcome to attend.
