An attendant at the Walmart gas station in Harrisville sustained injuries after she was accidentally run over by a motorist on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, officials say.

HARRISVILLE — A woman sustained serious injuries at the gas station at the Harrisville Walmart after being struck by a motorist, according to Harrisville Mayor Michelle Tait.

“It’s pretty serious,” Tait said. Dennis Moore, the assistant Harrisville police chief, said the victim was in stable condition in the intensive-care unit at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

The incident late Thursday morning led to the closure of the gas station, which was cordoned off with yellow police tape, and the adjacent Walmart. Signs on the entry to Walmart advised customers the locale would be closed until 6 a.m. Friday.

“Thank you for your understanding. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the signage read. Moore said Walmart officials made the decision to close the store.

Moore said the incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. Thursday as the gas station employee was cleaning a fuel tank port on the ground at the gas station. She had placed orange cones around her work location and was wearing a yellow safety vest, but a customer leaving the gas station, a female, didn’t see her and ran over her.

Moore said the incident didn’t appear to be malicious and the motorist didn’t seem to be impaired. “It was just an unfortunate situation where all the necessary elements lined up,” he said.

He said he doesn’t anticipate filing of charges in the matter given the accidental nature but that it remains under investigation. Officials haven’t identified the victim or motorist.
