Ogden City: Improvements coming to trail access near Mt. Ogden golf course

Mount Ogden Golf Course is seen June 23, 2021, in Ogden.

Ogden is known for its abundance of world-class recreation opportunities and access to natural resources. Many residents and visitors enjoy access to a vast trail system and two of the most scenic municipal golf courses in the state. To ensure these experiences continue to thrive and serve the community well, we’re making investments and adding new amenities to the area around Mt. Ogden Golf Course.

Over time, informal “social” trails have formed through the course signaling the need for trail improvements. In response, Ogden City — alongside the Ogden Trails Network and Trails Foundation of Northern Utah (TFNU) — is providing ongoing improvements and enhanced opportunities for all to use expansive, designated trail system surrounding the course.

Aric W. Manning, Executive Director of TFNU stated, “We’re here to support a community that gets it — using trails the right way, respecting trail etiquette, and cutting back on social trails so we can keep utilizing dedicated spaces for their intended use. When users and organizations are on the same page, everybody wins.”

What to expect in the coming months, beginning in May:

• New signage installed at social trail entrances.

• Maintenance gates added where the pipeline owned by the Bureau of Reclamation crosses the course.

• Natural fencing added to help guide users along the designated trails.

• A section of Gib’s Loop will be rerouted to accommodate user demands, improve trail flow and reroute away from the golf course.

• Ongoing enhancements to Gib’s Loop–a treasured and already welcoming part of our trail system.

• Lastly, the city is exploring options for a year-round dog park near the golf course.

We’re approaching these changes with a strong emphasis on facilitating and managing uses, education, and ensuring everyone has a safe and healthy opportunity for recreation. Ogden’s Community Policing (CP) officers will maintain a presence on the trails to assist with a feeling of safety and security among users.

We’re also planning volunteer outreach days May 1st – 3rd with the Ogden Trails Network and TFNU. Volunteers will be stationed at key access points to answer questions, share trail maps, and help guide trail users through these changes in a positive and welcoming way.

Ogden mayor Ben Nadolski said: “Ogden is incredibly blessed with an abundance of outdoor recreation ensuring the public has access to outdoors and healthy lifestyles, a key pillar of ‘The Ogden Way.’ I’m grateful for the strong support we continue to see from our community as we work together to respectfully manage these areas for their intended uses. When we all do our part, these spaces remain safe, accessible, and enjoyable for generations to come.”

You Spoke, We Listened: One of the most exciting outcomes of recent public feedback is the overwhelming support for enhancing Gib’s Loop. While it’s already a community favorite, we’re working to build on its strengths and keep it an inviting space for everyone. If you’re interested in contributing to the future of Gib’s Loop, reach out to the Ogden Trails Network Committee or TFNU to get involved in planning and volunteer days.

The golf division will continue to provide seasonal support for cross-country skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing. Safe access points for winter activities will be provided for families and enthusiasts alike.

Together, we can improve the incredible outdoor spaces that make Ogden such a special place to live, work, and play.
