Firefighter battle a blaze near Mountain Green on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025.Two tragic accidents occurred in the Ogden area over the weekend resulting in deaths.
In the mountains east of Ogden on Friday, the Mountain Green Fire Protection District reported a glider crash that sparked a wildfire.
“Bad day for our area firefighters,” the district said in a ppst on their Facebook page. “A glider crashed into Mahogany Mountain above Bohmann Ranch in Mountain Green about 2pm yesterday, killing the pilot and sparking a fire at about 7,000 feet up.”
Numerous agencies responded to the blaze and had to overcome some rough terrain.
“We were fortunate to have excellent help from all area agencies,” the district said in the post. “County Fire Warden Dave Vickers called for a full Wildland fire response, which brought Federal resources from USFS and BLM, and the US Forest Service Wasatch Helitack, which is based at the airport in Mountain Green. After a quick conference at the helibase with Mountain Green Fire units which were attempting to locate the crashed glider, Helitack responded immediately and confirmed the glider crash at the fire site.
“Meanwhile other Mountain Green firefighters along with Morgan County Fire & EMS, responded up the mountain over terrible terrain to just below the base of the fire. Federal resources and a unit from Wasatch Peaks Fire eventually arrived and everyone worked together seamlessly. The fire was held to about three acres.”
Even after the fire was contained, the challenges weren’t over for the responders.
“Then just as we thought we were through, Brush 131 got hung on a rock on the way down, blew a tire and suffered undercarriage damage,” the district said in the post. “It took several hours to tow the brush truck down the mountain. Firefighters finally called it a day about 01:30 (Saturday) morning.”
On the other side of Ogden at Willard Bay, the Utah Department of Natural Resources said the body of a 41-year-old Davis County man was recovered.
The search began after reports the man had fallen in the water near Pelican Beach around 5 p.m. on Saturday. The body was recovered late Saturday night.
“This is a tragic and unfortunate circumstance,” the DNR said in a press release. “The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division extends condolences to family and friends.”
