RIVERDALE — The Utah Department of Transportation is warning drivers of a major disruption along Interstate 15 this weekend.
In a press release Thursday, UDOT announced that a section of I-15 will be closed in both directions beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, with the interstate slated to reopen at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The closure is to facilitate the demolition of the 4400 South bridge over the freeway.
“Drivers should use the Interstate 84 ramps and Riverdale Road detour routes,” the release said. “Ogden Airport travelers should use 31st Street to access the airport.
“This work is part of a project to replace three bridges in Riverdale. The bridges were built in the 1960s and have been carefully maintained for more than 50 years. However, maintenance can only extend a bridge’s life so far. Replacing them now will provide safe, long-lasting connections that meet today’s traffic demands.”
The press release added that UDOT will be employing special methods to help speed up parts of the project.
“While traditional methods will be used to build the 4400 South bridge, UDOT will be using accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology for the other I-84 ramp bridges in this project,” the release said. “ABC is a safe and efficient process, as it results in better-quality bridges and an accelerated schedule. The project was originally expected to wrap up in late 2026, but with ABC’s accelerated schedule, the project is now estimated to wrap up in summer of 2026.”
