LOGAN — The summer season is in full swing, bringing with it opportunities for family road trips and outdoor recreation at Northern Utah’s myriad waterbodies, trails and campgrounds. However, those planning to drive through Logan Canyon early next week may have to work around scheduled highway closures.

As announced by the Utah Department of Transportation on Thursday, Logan Canyon will be fully closed overnight on Monday and Tuesday, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. According to UDOT, crews will be digging trenches to lay pipes, as well as replacing pavement, rumble strips and lane striping in the canyon.

State Route 39 is suggested as an alternative route.

The work is part of an ongoing roadway replacement project on Highway 89 from Beaver Creek Resort to milepost 492, which aims to extend the life of the roadway, replace damaged signage and guardrail and update drainage culverts. Construction has been ongoing in the canyon, where crews have also been working on a project to install fiber-optic cable.

That work began in early May and is scheduled to be completed in fall 2026.

The Logan Canyon closure follows the closure of the ramp from Park Lane to southbound Legacy Parkway near Farmington on Friday night, during which traffic was diverted to southbound Interstate 15. The closure was due to concrete work.

Closer to the Weber-north Davis area, a temporary traffic shift also began Friday evening near the intersection of 5600 South, or state Route 97, and 1900 West. A “Thru-U” configuration has been implemented and will remain in place for approximately three months, as left turns from 5600 South onto northbound or southbound 1900 West at the intersection will not be allowed.

UDOT Senior Communications Manager Mitch Shaw told the Standard-Examiner that the Thru-U is being implemented to protect crews and motorists while UDOT works to improve the intersection and widen 5600 South.
