Weber Human Services' Caregiver Support Program is offering free educational opportunities for caregivers this spring.OGDEN — Beginning Friday, the Caregiver Support Program at Weber Human Services’ Area Agency on Aging will offer weekly educational opportunities for family caregivers.
Classes presented by the Care for the Caregiver Coalition will run every Friday until April 25, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Weber Human Services Training Room on the third floor at 237 26th St. in Ogden. The series will kick off this Friday with “Dementia 101,” during which Alzheimer’s Association Program Manager Becka Schultz will discuss the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, stages and risk factors, current research, treatment options and other resources.
Karla Fulton, WHS’ Caregiver Support Program manager, told the Standard-Examiner that classes are offered every spring and fall to aid the roughly 40 families involved with the program and other area caregivers. Respite care is also available for caregivers looking to attend classes.
“Right now, we are partnered with DayBreak Senior Services, where you can take family members,” Fulton said. “They get four hours of free respite that we pay for to attend a series. That gives (caregivers) time to take them there, drop them off.”
Other class topics include “Scams, Fraud, and Elder Abuse,” “Home Health and Hospice,” “The Mindful Caregiver,” “Living with Vision and Hearing Loss” and more. According to Fulton, classes offer caregivers an opportunity to find a community that supports them and their efforts, in addition to providing valuable information.
“One of the aspects to avoid caregiver burnout is to be involved in a community,” Fulton said. “We encourage caregivers to come out and just be around other people who are stressed and going through the same things. … The biggest takeaway that we see behind it all is the relationships they have with each other.”
To that end, in addition to classes and in-home health care programs, WHS also organizes a caregiver support group, which meets on the first Wednesday of every month, from 2 to 3 p.m., in Room E303.
Although not required, prospective attendees are asked to RSVP by calling 801-625-3866. Those who are unable to attend in person may also watch virtually via Zoom. For more information, go to https://www.weberhsaging.net/caregiver-support/.
