According to Lt. William Farr of the Ogden City Police Department, the accident occurred around 7:40 a.m. on Thursday.
“A 63-year-old male was riding his bicycle westbound on the north shoulder of 12th Street near the 300 block,” he said in an email to the Standard-Examiner. “The male attempted to cross all lanes of traffic to turn onto Grant Avenue but failed to yield or check for oncoming vehicles.”
He said it was at this time the cyclist was struck by a vehicle.
“A vehicle traveling westbound in the #2 lane attempted to brake and swerve to avoid a collision but was unable to do so,” he said. “The bicyclist was struck, and his right ankle was pinned between the car and his bicycle, resulting in a severe injury and a partial amputation of his ankle.”
Farr said the cyclist was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
“The driver of the vehicle was determined to be not at fault,” he said. “No citations were issued, and none are expected at this time, as the bicyclist’s actions were found to be the primary contributing factor in the crash.”
The Ogden City Police Department and Ogden City Fire Department responded to the scene.
Farr said there is no further information at this time.
