Thursday afternoon, the Utah Board of Higher Education announced in a press release that Leslie Durham, Ph.D., has been appointed as the interim president of Weber State University.
This comes after last Thursday’s announcement that President Brad Mortensen will be stepping down to take on the presidency at Utah State University.
“(Durham) currently serves as provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Weber State University and brings over 15 years of experience in higher education leadership,” the release said. “She previously held roles at Boise State University, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, where she focused on improving student success, increasing research expenditures, launching new academic programs and stabilizing the college’s financial position amidst fiscal and political challenges. Other leadership roles at Boise State University include founding director, School of the Arts and associate dean, College of Arts and Sciences.”
In the release, Durham said she is looking forward to taking on the challenge.
“I am honored to serve as interim president of Weber State University during this transition,” she said. “Weber State is a remarkable institution, and I look forward to working closely with the students and campus community to ensure continuity, stability and continued progress in the months ahead.”
Amanda Covington, chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education, said Durham is the right person for the position.
“Leslie Durham is an experienced leader who understands Weber State University’s mission and role as well as its strategic direction,” Covington said in the release. “Her collaborative approach and background in academic affairs, performance measurement, student success, and community partnerships will ensure steady leadership for Weber State during this transition.”
WSU Interim Public Relations Director Rachel Badali told the Standard-Examiner that Durham is exactly the leader WSU needs during the interim period.
“She brings the perfect balance of fresh ideas and experience to ensure every student, every program, and every university priority is supported during this transition,” Badali said. “During this interim period, you can expect to see a continuation of what the university is already doing well, like preparing students for vibrant careers and moving full speed ahead to provide the best opportunities.”
Mortensen’s last day as WSU president is Nov. 10. Durham will take the interim position the same day.
Utah Board of Higher Education will determine a long-term replacement for Mortensen. Badali said this process could take several months.
