Bob Stevenson is a Republican candidate for the House District 16 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Standard-Examiner. The Standard-Examiner made an attempt to contact each candidate involved in a competitive race in Weber and Davis counties.

1. Why is the position you are running for important?

The area that Legislative 16 covers is one of the most important districts in the state. We cover Hill Air Force Base, a number of water sources for the Great Salt Lake, a huge job center, transportation corridors, and needed affordable housing.

2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?

My experience in private along with public service has prepared me to represent our district in all aspects of legislation. Serving as Mayor and at the County level allowed me to be involved in transportation, housing/zoning, water supply/conservation, education, public lands, economic development, public safety, the Air Force, etc. I will bring a unique background in representing Leg 16.

3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.

Priorities if elected include:
A. Removing state income tax on Social Security benefits for our seniors.
B. Programs to support our young people to being able to afford single family homes.
C. Protecting and preserving the Great Salt Lake.
D. Controlled economic development.
E. Restructure taxation to take the burden off property owners.

4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.

Compromise in local and state government is imperative to moving our state forward. When government is in gridlock like the federal level is, nothing gets accomplished. The Legislature must balance fiscal costs along with mandates that not only effect state levels but also education, Cities, and County’s.  Many taxpayers do not realize the passed down costs that the state government can mandate without any fiscal support. The Utah Association of Counties along with the League of Cities and Towns work very closely with the Legislature to protect our taxpayers at the local level.

5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?

Serving in elected position give you the opportunity to work with many voices of influence. Party platforms, special interest groups, special service districts, along with your own knowledge and understanding of issues. My experience and philosophy are and always will be to remember the importance of listening and learning all the facts. There are really smart people who elect you, and you can never forget to listen to their perspectives. Many of the decisions that I have made over the years come from learning and listening to my constituents. We have many pending decisions in this state that will affect the future generations that we need to get right. Water usage, environmental concerns, Data Centers, taxes, affordable housing, elections are all issues that we must get right.

6. What is the best way for readers to contact you and/or get more information about your platform?

As in all my elected positions, I am very accessible.  I very much enjoy talking with residents and getting their perspective on issues.  My election email is:  electbobstevenson@gmail.com
