Jim Alvey

Jim Alvey is a Republican candidate for the House District 12 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Standard-Examiner. The Standard-Examiner made an attempt to contact each candidate involved in a competitive race in Weber and Davis counties.

1. Why is the position you are running for important?

Utah House District 10

2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?

I am a life-long resident of District 10 – the only candidate with that claim. I was educated here, raised a family here and started and grew a business with employees there. I consider my family and business a success and will bring the same hard-work and insight to navigating these trails to the Legislature.

3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.

My first priority is affordability. Continually rising taxes, fees and cost-of-living are unsustainable on their current path. The need to find inefficiencies in government spending are paramount. The Great Salt Lake’s health is also a very high priority. My spent energies will include prioritization of this goal. I also will address issues that are benefitting the few at the cost of the many.

4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.

Some things should not be compromised. Others deserve compromise. This question seems too important for a broad answer, but I have always worked well with reasonable, common sense individuals in my personal and business life.

5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?

I am a good listener and I have a healthy dose of suspicion. I dislike wasting money. I believe in building on principle while avoiding expedience and pleasing everyone. I have spent more time in the place where I live going door-to-door meeting various people that I ever have in my life. I have been smiled at and cursed at – offered a Pepsi and told to get off their porch with these interactions, I’m not so sure this election is really about me. It’s as much if not much more about the voters. We are all different. There are innovators and blamers. There are kind and there are angry. There are those who are bitter and those who are hopeful. It takes all kinds if I could have one thing it would be that they were all voters. When it’s all set and done it’s not my feet, but your feet that make the difference.
