Letter: Health care has become ‘a medical mess’

Jul 23, 2024

Our healthcare system has surely become a medical mess, judging by my recent experience of dealing with it for a spouse that has suffered unforeseen, multiple strokes. The morass seems to generate from the current trend of doctors working only three days a week, then off on long weekends and vacations. Nurses and therapists alike have fallen into this trend as well, administering harsh delays upon those in need of medical assistance. Please remind the public they must not get sick on holidays or weekends or during the myriad vacations planned by health care professionals. The consequences of delayed medical expertise can cost patients a lack of the medical care they desperately need, when they need it most. Likewise, be aware the rehabilitation facilities that at first seem plentiful on the Wasatch Front are overcrowded and understaffed. Unless you are independently wealthy or have the top end of medical insurance, those needing daily therapy and care had best plan on getting that at home. “Instacare” clinics, where you have no idea who the doctors are you will see, have become the go-to replacement for primary doctors who have so many patients to slot into three days-a-week schedules they may never be aware of your actual medical needs. Truly the American medical mess has thrust us into third world levels of care.
