Letter: Memories of the past in Utah
I was born in 1934, so I think I qualify as an old geezer. I have been thinking back to when I was younger and how much things have changed over the years. I remember growing up in Salt Lake City in the 40’s and going to the movies. I could get into a double feature movie with a cartoon at the end for 14 cents (if you were young enough) and for 35 cents more I could buy popcorn and candy. As a young adult, I joined the Salt Lake Police Department. My salary was $295 a month, plus a $15 clothing allowance. At that time, the police chief was earning $10,000.00 a year. I thought if I could earn that much I would be set for life. Back in the 50’s and 60’s a medium-priced house cost under $15,000.00 and most everyone could afford to pay rent. I have many fond memories of those bygone days.
