Letter: We need action, not political theater

Mar 14, 2024

I have never been a faithful watcher of the “State of the Union” broadcasts. This year, because of the state of our democracy, I tuned in. I believe that President Biden did a fairly good job, despite the constant interruptions. I stayed for the Republican response from Senator Katie Britt and that is when I truly realized how great our country is. Imagine, a couple of millionaires sitting around their kitchen table fretting about how to keep the lights on, and they start worrying about the average American family trying to get by on a seven-dollar an hour minimum wage. “Excuse me, but could someone pass the “Grey Poupon,” my croque monsieur pie is getting cold.” Senator Katie Britt is an attorney, and her husband is a retired multi-million-dollar NFL player, and now a Washington Lobbyist. Oh sorry, back to those struggling families. We need to stop those horrible immigrant types from invading our country, but we should not ask why it is so easy for the criminal ones to get a firearm after they arrive? And heavens, why would we want to pass any kind of immigration reform, when immigration can be used as a political football instead? It is interesting that Katie’s position is that the only healthcare women need is “In Vitro Fertilization” (IVF) which her home state (Alabama) has shut down; with most average families unable to even imagine such an IVF expense. The one thing Katie never touched upon is what she and all the other people in the Congress and the Senate have done to make things better for those struggling families. Katie and Company cannot even establish a budget to keep the government’s lights on. We need real action from everyone in Washington, not excuses and fear.
