Guest opinion: Why I’m running for Davis County sheriff

A photo of Jon Atkin, Davis County sheriff candidateI am running for Davis County Sheriff because I believe this office can be stronger, healthier, more accountable, and better prepared for the future.
This decision has not been easy. I currently serve inside the Sheriff’s Office, and I understand the personal and professional risk that comes with challenging the status quo. But leadership requires speaking the truth, speaking up for others, and sometimes stepping forward when you know it may cost you.
I know the Davis County Sheriff’s Office from the inside. I have worked in court security, patrol, criminal investigations, department-wide training, SWAT, and Internal Affairs. In my current role, I have had to understand policy, operations, discipline, accountability, and the culture of the entire office. I have seen the good. I have seen the problems. And I believe deeply in what this office can become.
The problems are real. Staffing has been stretched thin for far too long. Morale has suffered. Budget challenges continue. Recruiting and retention must improve. Relationships with cities, county leaders, state partners, and other agencies must be strengthened. These issues affect employees, taxpayers, and the quality of public safety in Davis County. Years of experience at the highest levels of the office have not solved these problems. That is why I believe new leadership is needed.
I do not believe leadership is defined by rank alone. Rank matters. Experience matters. Service matters. But all of that only matters if it is current and relevant. Leadership requires judgment, humility, courage, vision, and the ability to earn trust. It requires listening to people at every level, making difficult decisions, and being honest about what is working and what is not. Davis County needs current leadership that understands the work being done today and the challenges coming next.
My background is broad and current. I serve in law enforcement, work part time in the fire service, and serve as a commissioned Air Force Intelligence Officer in the Utah Air National Guard. I am a husband and father of four. I understand public safety through law enforcement, emergency response, military leadership, intelligence work, and family life.
Davis County is changing. Law enforcement is changing. Technology, cybercrime, artificial intelligence, child exploitation, drug trafficking, and regional crime are all moving quickly. The next sheriff must be prepared for the problems we face today and the threats coming tomorrow.
I have worked hard to build relationships across Davis County because no sheriff succeeds alone. Public safety requires trust with employees, citizens, mayors, commissioners, legislators, police chiefs, fire leaders, prosecutors, schools, and community partners. The sheriff must be accountable to the people, but he must also be able to bring people together.
I am not running to protect a title or preserve the way things have always been done. I am running to do the work, fix real problems, support the people doing the job, protect our children, defend constitutional rights, and prepare this office for the future.
I respectfully ask for your vote for Davis County Sheriff.
God bless.
