Letter: Reflecting on Orrin Hatch’s political legacy

Oct 16, 2021

Recently in the news it was reported that the new soon-to-be released book written by Anita Hill talks about the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas several years ago. As people may recall, Anita Hill underwent brutal questioning by former U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah regarding allegations of sexual harassment of Ms. Hill by Justice Thomas. I’m sure most people believed that Ms. Hill spoke the truth but Justice Thomas did not.

Also in the news, it was reported that a certain prescription drug was being sold for $4,100.00 for a 30-day supply. That comes out to $137.00 per pill. Many people who have been prescribed the prescription cannot afford the steep price, so are not able to take it. Senator Hatch was a friend and great supporter of the pharmaceutical companies.

Lastly, do not forget that in the last days of Senator Hatch’s thirty-six years of public service, he said that he was pretty sure that Donald Trump would go down in history as one of our greatest presidents. Of course, that was before Trump lost the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

I guess the negative things mentioned above done by the former senator do not matter as he was elected six times as a U.S. senator.
