Letter: The ‘Immunity Idol’ for the Business Depot Ogden
Wouldn’t it be amazing to rise above the common citizen and make yourself exempt from those inconvenient Ogden City municipal ordinances that you codify and enforce against everyone else? For the last year, the Caldwell Administration has done just that for their Boyer Company managed Business Depot Ogden (BDO) property. Fugitive dust, standing water and an over a mile long blood thirsty mosquito breeding reserve have all become a way of life for the neighbors. In October 2021, Mayor Caldwell received his first notification of standing water on Ogden City’s BDO property, along the eastside of 1200 West from 600 South to 400 North. The Boyer Company created the standing water problem when they removed the BDO west fence and covered over the existing streetside drainage. There is no other spot in Ogden City that reflects the deplorable conditions along this 10-block stretch of roadway, and little has been done to mediate the standing water problem. The half-finished BDO zero landscaping should be an embarrassment to the Caldwell administration and their Boyer Company partner. The current state of the property is both a nuisance and a public health hazard. Mayor Caldwell has maintained in public meetings that all complaints are forwarded to the applicable city department for action. In this last year, he has yet to identify who in his city administration is responsible for cleaning up this mess and what is their timetable for the prompt completion of this project. Silence is not a solution and bestowing Ogden City and The Boyer Company the “Immunity Idol” for code enforcement harms the entire community.
