Letter: Ashamed by failure to prevent Ukraine fiasco

Feb 26, 2022

I am amazed at World Democracies and the United States.

In 1990 a murdering, brutal, bully of a dictator invaded and occupied a smaller, Constitutional Monarchy country. The dictator claimed the small country was historically part of his country.

The democracies of the world united to remove the invaders. Remember Kuwait and Operation Desert Shield?

Today a murdering, brutal, bully of a dictator invades a smaller country, a fully functioning Democracy, under the pretext it is historically part of his country. While some Eastern Provinces of Ukraine have primarily Russian populations and favor affiliation with Russia, the vast Majority of Ukrainians do not. Many of even the Russian Ukrainians are like U.S. immigrants from Central and South America who want to be U.S. Citizens, not an annexed part of Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, etc.

Today the response of Democratic Governments in the world is make it more difficult for some Russian Banks and key Russian families to get loans and have some assets in the West, frozen. Really strong sanctions??? Russians know about untraceable Bitcoin wallets.

What happened to defense of a sovereign country’s autonomy? Where is our defense of Democracy against totalitarian takeover?

This is a sad day for Democracy and the United States. Given the Democracies’ tepid defense of Ukraine, we just invite repetition of such power and territory actions in the future. China and Taiwan? Remember history when Neville Chamberlin in 1938, dealing with another murdering, brutal, bully of a dictator occupying a smaller country, presumed for “peace in our time”. Learn from History!
