Letter: Inflation and property tax hikes

Jul 2, 2022

In the last year gas has gone up over $2.00 a gallon. Food prices have risen on average 11%. Housing rental has gone up. Price of new and used cars have also gone up. The average cost of a house continues upward. Per the website Weber County GIS my house was worth $57,000 in 1990. Now it is worth $431,000. I paid $2,092.00 in property tax last November. Per the website it will be over $2,700.00 this year. That is before North Ogden will add 47.5% property tax hike for the new police building because of increased building material cost and the interest rate hike. Some of the increase will go for increased employee wages. Per the Standard Examiner Harrisville will increase property tax by 166%. Riverdale will increase by 94%. Three other cities in Weber Country will increase property taxes. Public hearings will be held in August. Weber and Ogden School Districts are proposing adding to the property tax hike. Weber County is also proposing another property tax hike. Now is the time for the average citizen to call the city administrators, school districts and county commissioners for an explanation and justification for the property tax hikes. Businesses will also be impacted by the property tax hike. They will have to raise the price of their products and services to pay for the increase. Housing rentals will increase. This adds to the inflation. As the old adage goes let the phones ring off the hook of the city administrators, school districts and county offices from the citizens asking for an explanation and justification for the proposed property tax hikes.
