Letter: Clarifying confusion about election, school board role

Oct 11, 2022

I am Heidi Gross, running for Weber School Board, District 6. As a candidate I’ve been asked by several concerned community members why we are running again when there was an election in the spring. I’d like to clarify that question. In June we had a primary election. The purpose of that primary was to narrow the candidates down to two. Something unusual happened in the District 6 race. We had three people (who happened to be all women) file for the position. This actually was history being made. Now we are approaching the general election in November. We have two candidates for that one board seat.

The local School Board race is a non-partisan seat, meaning that the candidates are not tied to a political party or make decisions along a political party line. I would like to emphasize that a school board member is the voice of the community–especially students, parents and teachers. Board members are to take concerns to the board for discussion and policy-making, to ensure that our schools are run appropriately. Other responsibilities include fiscal spending, and hiring future superintendents.

I would like to point out that the Superintendent is not the President of the School Board. The Superintendent works for the School Board, not the School Board working for the Superintendent.

I would like to reiterate when elected I will listen to the community and see that our children receive a quality education because they are our future.

Heidi Gross

Candidate for Weber School Board District 6
