Letter: Two-party representation is necessary for democracy to thrive in Utah

Sep 15, 2022

Our Founding Fathers feared development of a two-party political system out of concern that one party would dominate, oppressing the other, or alternatively that the two parties would devolve into cycles of revenge and retribution as power shifted.

Utah has become a sad example of the former scenario. The Republican super-majority in our legislature has ignored issues of importance to Utahns — for example, fair political boundaries; and protections for the environment, women’s reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ civil rights. Simultaneously, it shifted power from the people and local governments to itself. Bills that will accelerate this slide toward autocratic one-party rule have already been planned.

Two highly electable Democrats are running for the legislature in Northern Utah. Dr. Rosemary Lesser (HD 10 incumbent) and Monica Hall (HD 8) both value democratic principles and will reach across party lines to work on issues important to you, their constituents. Furthermore, their election will help maintain and advance desperately needed political and gender balance in our legislature. Republicans, by voting for these two moderate Democrats, you can exercise the vigilance necessary to ensure that both democracy and personal liberty thrive in Utah.
